Compounding is the preparation of a custom formulation of a medication to meet a unique need of a patient that cannot be met with a commercially available medication. Some people and animals need medications that aren’t commercially available, meaning they aren’t mass-produced and available at a standard pharmacy.
For example:
- If you are allergic to an inactive ingredient, such as a preservative or dye, gluten, or lactose, our pharmacist can make that medication without that problem-causing ingredient.
- If your child cannot swallow pills, we can make a liquid option.
- If you take commercially-available hormones, your body may react better to a customized hormone therapy that includes the precise dose of hormones that your body needs.
- If your pet has difficulty taking a needed medication, we can change the flavor and or dosage form.
